This advanced English proficiency course (CEF C1-C2) is designed for learners aiming to refine their language skills while developing intercultural competence. Through a blend of spoken and written texts—including articles, essays, speeches, literary texts and multimedia sources—participants engage in discussions that deepen their understanding of diverse perspectives and cultural contexts. The course’s grammatical focus emphasizes text grammar and stylistic analysis, enabling learners to dissect complex structures and enhance coherence in and add nuance to their own writing and speech. The lexical syllabus targets advanced vocabulary acquisition, covering idioms, phrasal verbs, and nuanced collocations, all essential for sophisticated expression and comprehension. Students will cultivate fluency and accuracy through exercises and assignments that encourage critical thinking and articulate, culturally aware communication with native speakers of English, preparing them for high-level academic, professional, and social interactions in English.
Participants will have 8 bi-monthly training sessions with the course instructors. Please note that the course involves about 3 hours of self-study and preparation per week.
At the end of this course, you can understand with ease virtually everything that you hear or read. You can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

To participate in the course, your proficiency in English needs to be at CEFR level C1. As a prospective participant, you will be asked to take a diagnostic entry test, which will give you an indication of your level of proficiency before the course. You can register for this entry test here.
During the course participants are asked to complete several writing assignments.
Tony Foster was born in Brisbane, Australia, in 1966. After secondary school he studied English (specializing in Historical Linguistics and Medieval Literature) and Law (specializing in Comparative Private Law). Foster has been employed by the University of Leiden since 1990, teaching English Language, Legal English and Applied Linguistics at the Leiden University Language Centre (until 2002) and the Department of English. He has also worked as an in-house translator and interpreter.
In addition, he teaches the Legal Translation (Dutch/English) and Comparative Criminal Law courses for the Stichting Instituut voor Gerechtstolken en –Vertalers (SIGV). His research interests are Historical Linguistics, Legal Lexicography, and the teaching of Legal EngLish.
Martijn Lemmen studeerde tijdens zijn bachelor Engelse Taal en Cultuur aan Universiteit Leiden. Daarna studeerde hij daar de MA-opleiding Translation in Theory and Practice, met als specialisatie Legal Translation. Na zijn MA werd hij docent Taalvaardigheid aan dezelfde universiteit, waar hij nu ook bezig is met zijn dissertatie over de ambiguïteit van modale werkwoorden.
