Inclusive language in English

How should I say that? Is that the right term? Is this outdated? Language is changing, and so are we. This two-hour workshop offers a concise overview of the main developments regarding inclusive language use in English.

The workshop covers three main inclusive language topics:
- gender-aware language use;
- language around ability and disability;
- language around background and ethnicity.

In these topics, we delve into recent (and not so recent) developments in language use and the intentions and sensitivities behind terminology, to better grasp how our language affects meaning and shapes concepts. As well as terminology, we also explore our strategies and approaches to language use.

In addition to the 3 main topics, the workshop also covers particular contexts of language use, such as in HR scenarios and in academia. As the target audience is primarily Dutch-to-English translators, we also address "false friends" between the two languages.

The workshop is a mix of explanation and presentation, examples and discussion. There is plenty of time for questions and to discuss inclusive language conundrums faced by the participants.

Leerdoelen

After participating in the workshop, participants will feel more confident in making sure that they are using inclusive terms and language constructions in English. Participants will also be able to better understand the reasons behind these language developments.

Our society - and our language - is changing. As language professionals, we must ensure that we remain up to date on the developments taking place, to ensure that we deliver accurate, thoughtful and tailored products and services to our clients.

Emi Howard is a freelance translator and editor (native English) specialised in inclusive language use. They have hosted inclusive language workshops for parties such as the University of Groningen, for whom they also drafted the University's Inclusive Language Style Guide, as well as for editing platform Scribbr. Emi therefore understands translators' dilemmas as well as clients' current needs relating to inclusive language.

Inloggen
Je ontvangt ruim voor de start van de webmeeting eenmalig een instructiebericht m.b.t. het registreren en inloggen op het platform, zodat je de livewebmeeting kunt bijwonen. Webinarmeetings zijn interactieve presentaties (live), die eventueel ondersteund worden door een PowerPoint-presentatie op je scherm. De docent kan de deelnemers in groepjes indelen en aan het werk zetten. Alle deelnemers zijn in beeld door middel van een webcam en kunnen via hun microfoon reageren. Tijdens de live webmeetings kun je mondeling maar ook schriftelijk vragen stellen aan de spreker.

NB: registreer tijdig; je ontvangt dan namelijk 24 uur én 1 uur voor aanvang van de meeting een melding/herinnering vanuit Zoom.

Opname
Er wordt geen opname van de meeting gemaakt; vanwege het interactieve karakter van deze meeting is live deelname verplicht.

Evaluatie en certificering
Voor de verstrekking van een certificaat c.q. toekenning van pe-punten/nascholingspunten van de stichting RTGS is het vereist dat je
1) de meeting volledig volgt; én
2) het evaluatieformulier invult. Het evaluatieformulier bevindt zich in Mijn KTV > Cursussen. 

Wat heb ik nodig om een meeting bij te wonen?
Om een meeting bij te wonen, heb je slechts een laptop/computer/tablet met een goede internetverbinding en geluid(sboxen) of een headset nodig. Bij meetings is een webcam aanbevolen.
